People & Community

The East Village master plan encourages social sustainability.

Most important, the community is walkable. So far, CMLC has upgraded sidewalks, roads and other infrastructure. All these changes improve connectivity within East Village, and make it easier for pedestrians to get around. Public green spaces are scattered throughout the neighbourhood. The accessibility of nature, in the form of public squares, community gardens, RiverWalk and St. Patrick’s Island, adds beauty to the area and encourages healthy lifestyles. Community gardens encourage reconnection with nature and neighbours.

East Village will be ripe with cultural facilities, and many public art installations are already in place. Heritage buildings are being conserved, refurbished and getting a second chance at life. The character of the community will also get a boost from amenity programming for amenities like RiverWalk and the National Music Centre.

Even the development of the master plan itself has been a model of social sustainability, with wide consultation of area residents and users. Finally, improvements to the neighbourhood already completed by CMLC are adding to an increased sense of safety, neighbourliness, optimism, and civic pride.
