The Cantos Music Foundation houses a world-renowned collection of more than 700 musical artifacts, and uses its cultural space and musical expertise to educate and engage the public in the world of music.
In 2009, CMLC initiated a national campaign looking for ideas to celebrate the history of the King Eddy and rejuvenate the hotel. The Cantos Music Foundation stepped forward with a brilliant proposal: reinvent the King Eddy as a National Music Centre (NMC).
The $120 – $130 million NMC will be 110,000 square feet of musical magic – giving Canadians a place that amplifies the love, sharing and understanding of music through collections and exhibitions, programs, research and collaborations across the country. This spring, it was announced that discussions are underway to locate the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in the new NMC.
To date, $75 million has been committed to the project by the federal and provincial governments and the City of Calgary. The remainder of the funds will be raised by Cantos. The first phase of the NMC is scheduled to open in 2013.
