Situated on the southwest corner of 4th Street and 9th Avenue SE – the gateway to East Village – the Downtown District Energy Centre supplies efficient, stable and environmentally-sustainable heat to much of the new and existing residential and commercial space in East Village and the adjacent downtown core. Connected to participating buildings by a network of underground insulated pipes, the centralized heating system reduces emissions by using hot water produced as a byproduct of electricity generation and eliminates the need for boiler systems in connected buildings.
District Energy currently services 14 neighbourhood buildings, including the Calgary Municipal Building, the Hillier Building, the St. Louis Hotel, the Simmons Building and Studio Bell, home of the National Music Centre. Increased capacity of supply and a well-connected infrastructure ensures a stable source of heat to East Village.
