East Village/Infrastructure

The East Village stormwater wetland was completed in 2008 and is the first, and only, stormwater treatment facility of its kind in Calgary’s inner city. The facility is located on the northwest corner of the Fort Calgary site and serves several purposes. Stormwater run-off from the streets of East Village flows into the site’s forebay, which collects silt and sediment. The water then moves into the wetland pond, where wetland plantings further filter the water, naturally cleaning it before it flows back into the Bow River.

Besides being a thriving wetland habitat for birds, muskrats, dragonflies and other aquatic life, the stormwater wetland also helps control floods and features pathways, a bridge and a lookout, providing a place for Calgarians to connect with nature.
