East Village road improvement program concludes

Today at 3:00 PM (MT), Calgary Municipal Land Corporation – the organization charged with the redevelopment of the East Village revitalization project – proudly laid the last brick of its road improvement program at the corner of 7th Avenue and Riverfront Lane. The placing of the last of 35,000 square meters of brick marks the end of an aggressive road infrastructure program that has been six years in delivery.

“In 10 phases of work and six construction seasons, CMLC has been changing the physical landscape of East Village one day at a time,” said CMLC President & CEO Michael Brown. “We’ve added permanent art, we’ve built pedestrian and cyclist pathways, delivered the 4th Street Underpass and today, we are celebrating the conclusion of our roadway improvement program.”

The East Village roads improvement program amounts to six years of utility work, road servicing, streetscaping and flood proofing. The 35,000 square meters of brick are both fully functional and highly aesthetic connections within East Village and link the neighbourhood into the wider Calgary community.

In 2007, CMLC began its road infrastructure program along 8th Ave. SE, where the lion’s share of current East Village residents are located. Since then, the improvement program has rolled out across 6th St. SE adjacent to the Fort Calgary Lands; 5th St. SE, which now winds around the site of a new public park site; and 9th Ave. and 4th St. SE, which includes the highly successful underpass that now connects EV south to Stampede and Victoria Park, and north to Riverfront Ave. Today, the 7th Avenue SE improvements are complete from the new Riverfront Lane South to 6th St. SE.

“It’s a proud moment for the whole team,” said CMLC’s Neil Mackimmie, Senior Development Manager. “It’s another important step toward making East Village whole.”
