CMLC-sponsored event supports Bow Valley College’s ‘1,000 Women Rising’

To celebrate of the opening of the Wheel of Women plaza on RiverWalk™, Calgary Municipal Land Corporation (CMLC) – the organization leading the highly successful revitalization of East Village and the Rivers District – is hosting Wheel of Women Yoga Night, an outdoor yoga class especially for women on Wednesday, July 15.

“One of the many infrastructure projects CMLC has delivered since embracing the Rivers District redevelopment challenge in 2007, Wheel of Women is a circular urban plaza that honours notable Calgary women who shaped the future of East Village or the City of Calgary through their contributions to art and culture, literacy and learning, community building and planning,” says Michael Brown, President & CEO, CMLC. “It’s part of a more comprehensive infrastructure program that also incorporates an expanded community garden, a children’s play area and plenty of seating.”

Located on RiverWalk™ near Fort Calgary Edges and the south base of St. Patrick’s Bridge (all of which are outputs of CMLC’s infrastructure program), the Wheel of Women was completed on June 15, 2015. Among the 30 women it honours are Annie Davison, founder of Calgary Public Library; Mary Dover (nee Cross), one of Canada’s first female military officers; Native education advocate Daisy Crowchild; and Calgary City Councillor Virnetta Anderson. “Each of these important women is commemorated in a ‘tweet’ inscribed in stone and describing her contributions to our city,” says Susan Veres, CMLC’s VP Marketing & Communications. “To help select the 30 honourees featured in the Wheel of Women, we engaged a group of Calgary women who’ve made notable contributions of their own as educators, librarians, lawyers, builders, developers and leaders in other businesses and fields. Engaging people from the broader community to help inform our ideas and shape our work has been a hallmark of all of our infrastructure improvement projects here in East Village and the Rivers District.”

Local yoga instructor Stefanie Rizvi will lead the outdoor yoga class on July 15. Check-in begins at 7:00 pm and the class runs from 7:30 to 8:30.

Cost of the class is by donation. All proceeds will support 1,000 Women Rising – a Bow Valley College initiative aimed at helping female students overcome barriers to learning, finish their post-secondary education and achieve their career ambitions. CMLC will match the contribution from the Wheel of Women Yoga Night up to $2,000.
