The first of 11,000 move-ins marks major milestone in CMLC’s redevelopment vision

For the past seven years, Calgary Municipal Land Corporation (CMLC) has been advancing an ambitious redevelopment vision for Calgary’s oldest neighbourhood – East Village. Today marks a major milestone toward fulfilling that vision as the first of 11,000 anticipated new East Villagers takes up residence in the neighbourhood’s first new condominium tower, named – aptly – “FIRST.”

“We’re as delighted to welcome our first new resident to East Village as he is delighted to be here,” says Michael Brown, CMLC’s President and CEO. “Looking around, it’s easy to see how much infrastructure has taken shape since we started redeveloping East Village in 2008. Infrastructure is important, of course, but ultimately, our vision for East Village is all about people. It’s people in their new homes and people on the streets that will make our East Village vision complete.”

“We’re as thrilled as CMLC to welcome the neighbourhood’s first new resident,” adds Fred Serrafero, vice president, Development & Construction FRAM Building Group – the developer of FIRST condominium tower. “We were among the first developers to purchase land in the newly emerging East Village because we believed in CMLC’s vision, and they’ve delivered fully and dramatically on every aspect of that vision. The transformation we’ve witnessed here in East Village has been nothing less than extraordinary.”

Situated on Confluence Way at 5th Street SE across from the historic Simmons Building, FIRST – FRAM + Slokker’s premiere development in East Village – broke ground in February 2013, signalling the start of construction on the 18-storey tower with 196 condominium homes.

Today, the keys to the first of those 196 homes are being handed over to Marc Patel a 28 year old Pharmacy Manager for Canada Safeway. “I chose to move to East Village, because I wanted to live in a condominium that was close to all the great events in this city, and a place that was conveniently close to work, the gym and a running path, said Patel. I am excited to spend the first day in my new home today.”

FRAM + Slokker are welcoming six (6) residents a day in their FIRST residential tower. The team’s second project in East Village - named, VERVE- is expected to break ground later this fall.
