On Sunday, May 31st, local residents, CMLC employees, the ward alderman and local social agency representatives came together to transform an empty lot at the corner of 7th Avenue and 5th Street S.E. into a temporary community garden.
An ideal gathering place for socializing and relaxing, the creation of the new garden is a vital step in creating a new social hub of activity for residents of every age and every walk of life to enjoy. Making the community garden a new focal point in East Village has given the residents a place to garden, break down barriers with fellow neighbours and begin to imagine what their future neighbourhood will look like.
The garden will provide a sense of community, contribute to the neighbourhood’s beautification and provide a unique connection to the local environment. A permanent community garden will eventually be established in another location as part of the overall development plan for East Village.
On January 19, 2009, CMLC released EVE Magazine. EVE stands for East Village Experience and the magazine is intended to describe how East Village will achieve a sense of place through sights, sounds and experiences.
November 19, 2008, from 3-7pm at Rotary House in Stampede Park, the detailed plans for the first phase of construction for Riverwalk in East Village were revealed. CMLC's design team has been working on their plans for months and we believe the wait was worth it. Public feedback was excellent.
On October 16th, 2008 at 5:30pm, a street party was held outside the King Edward Hotel on 4th St between 9th Ave and 8th Ave SE. Over 300 people attended the event. Visit www.kingeddielives.com for more information.
On June 24, 2008, CMLC held its first Annual General Meeting with its sole shareholder, Mayor and Council of the City of Calgary. During the meeting, the shareholder approved our 2007 Annual Report including financial statements, appointed a new auditor for 2008 and reappointed our board of directors. Upon the recommendations of CMLC, our shareholder also approved three new projects for CMLC: the Fourth Street SE underpass to Stampede, investing in our heritage building, and undertaking environmental remediation throughout East Village.
