CMLC to Break Ground for 4th Street Underpass

Shorter Commute Times and Connection to East Village Key Benefits of Project

On June 24, 2009 work will begin on the 4th Street Underpass in Calgary’s East Village. Scheduled to be complete in 2011, the 4th Street Underpass will be the main artery connecting the East Village to Victoria and Stampede Park. Based on extensive consultation that began in 2004 and approved by the Mayor and Aldermen of the City of Calgary in 2008, the underpass design will also begin the framework for a future transit node. This underpass will support greater integration between public transit, pedestrians, cyclists and will accommodate a future South East LRT transit alignment and high-speed rail facilities.

"Connecting the East Village to downtown and surrounding neighbourhoods is a high priority for CMLC. With this project breaking ground we have reached a big milestone for the East Village and its continuing transition into a vibrant inner-city community," comments Chris Ollenberger, President and CEO, CMLC.

4th Street underpass construction schedule:

North of CPR Tracks (June – November)

  • 9th Avenue S.E. will be reduced to two lanes and be a two-way road to allow continued east-west access into the East Village and downtown during construction.
  • 4th Street S.E. will have sections closed from now until November but local access will be maintained via alternative routes.

South of CPR Tracks

  • 3rd Street S.E. will be closed between 11th Avenue and 10th Avenue S.E. for utility upgrades. Construction timeline: August – September.
  • 10 Avenue S.E. will be closed from 3rd Street S.E. to Olympic Way for utility upgrades. Construction timeline: September.
  • 4th Street S.E. Underpass construction begins in September and will continue until 2011.

CPR Siding Track Relocation at 30th Avenue S.E.

  • To accommodate the 4th Street S.E. underpass, existing CPR siding tracks will be relocated to Manchester Yard between Dartmouth Road S.E. and Highfield Road S.E. south of 26th Avenue S.E. A new roundabout will be constructed at 26th Avenue S.E. and the 30th Avenue S.E. crossing will be closed permanently. Existing roadworks and intersections will be reconfigured in this area with temporary detours in effect at times during construction between July and October 2009.
