Environmental Remediation CLOSE

East Village Environmental Remediation

The environmental remediation of East Village is a crucial element for the successful redevelopment of the Rivers District.

Due to East Village's former life as a centre of railroad and industry, there are a number of sites within the area that have significant contamination issues. Phase I and Phase II environmental site assessment studies have confirmed that the entire East Village generally has some level of environmental contamination.

A risk management plan prepared by Jacques Whitford AXYS Ltd. is in place to ensure that proper handling and on-site safety measures are used when contaminated soils and groundwater are encountered. We are also prepared to ensure that any remaining contamination that we may discover is managed safely and appropriately to protect current and future users of East Village.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Remediate

Since October 2007, over 50,000 tonnes of contaminated material have been removed in the environmental remediation process, including building materials, asbestos, wood, and cement construction debris. The contaminated soil was replaced with clean soil. The imported fill was tested to confirm that it satisfied the applicable Alberta Environment criteria for residential and parkland use. What we are left with is a safe area in which to create new parks and facilities for all to enjoy.

The remediation program will also attempt to reduce the amount of materials going to Calgary area landfills whenever possible and will help in reducing our environmental impact. It's the right thing to do for ourselves and for our planet.
