The location of the East Village is perfect: it's in the downtown core, a short drive to Calgary International Airport and close to countless cultural venues. But there's one catch: there aren't that many choices to get into and out of the area to reach these amenities.
The Fourth Street Underpass project was identified in the Rivers District Community Revitalization Plan as the highest priority infrastructure project for the successful revitalization of East Village. Its development will provide an important connection linking East Village with Victoria Park and Stampede Park and will improve the walkability of nearby Calgary neighbourhoods such as Inglewood, Downtown, and Beltline.
The underpass will be pedestrian friendly and designed to make it more inviting for people to get into and out of the East Village neighbourhood. This sustainable community development project will lead to shorter commute times and encourage people to get outside and use their feet more than their accelerators.
Based on extensive public consultation, the underpass design will form the basis for a future transit node supporting greater integration between public transit, pedestrians, and cycling. It will also accommodate a future public light-rail transit alignment and high-speed rail facilities.
