A focus on creating a pedestrian-centred community guides us as we plan the new East Village. Narrower streets and raised intersections to calm traffic, wider sidewalks that are set back further from the street to make walks more pleasant, hundreds of trees, European-inspired paving stones to enhance the beauty of the area, and even leading-edge solar powered garbage compactors to help keep the area green. Driving becomes optional as transit and pathways make for healthier and more environmentally friendly ways to commute. Lighting will make streets more secure and inviting, while benches and public art will give a feeling that you are walking in a well-thought-out living space rather than on a street. Eighth Avenue SE will soon incorporate and showcase these new streetscape designs and will be a real life example of what the rest of the East Village neighbourhood can look like.
