Located on the east side of downtown Calgary, stretching from the Bow River to the south end of Stampede Park, is the Rivers District. The site of the city's birthplace and once a thriving business and residential community, today the area is economically depressed and plagued with crime and complex social issues—it has garnered the reputation as the "abandoned heart of the city."
The challenge of renewing this district and turning it into a destination is complex, but also a significant opportunity, and we have a plan to make it brilliant: the Rivers District Community Revitalization Plan.
In just a few short years, we will reclaim and remediate valuable riverfront property and reshape and reconnect this blighted area into a seamless whole with the rest of Calgary. The RiverWalk promenade will be the focal feature of the Rivers District, and we are working on the creation of new retail, residential, recreational, and commercial corridors within the area.
The East Village redevelopment plan will include a combination of thoughtful and eclectic new business and residential developments, enhanced by shops, cafés, restaurants, and parks, all in the heart of a major metropolitan area. When complete, the East Village development will become Calgary's premier sustainable community, and it will shape a future as magnificent as the Rocky Mountains that are the backdrop to our city.
