Halcrow Yolles ñ The Reach (Calgary)

Celebrating Calgaryís Blue Ribbon Bow River, known to many across the globe as the best Dry Fly fishing destination in the world. From the island a cast is made, its loops create the gateways to the communities and recaptures the Island, ìThe Reachî.

The structural concept for the new St. Patrickís Bridge is based on the principles of an arch working in combination with beam elements. The free form shape of the structure is organized in such a way that the two main spans are supported by arch elements and these arch elements in turn support the deck through a system of tension rods. The deck shares the work of the arches and has section properties that are sufficient to act as a simple span beam, the deck also fulfils the demands to maintain lateral and torsional stability and also to control deck vibrations.

The final structure will include the complete lateral and vertical strength, stiffness and energy dissipation capacity to resist the gravity, lateral, and other induced loadings within the prescribed limits of deformation and strength demand. The adequacy of the structural systems will be demonstrated through the construction of a mathematical model and evaluation of this model for the effects of the prescribed loads. Individual members will be provided with adequate strength to resist the shears, axial forces and moments determined in accordance with these provisions. Continuous load path or paths with adequate strength and stiffness shall be provided to transfer all forces from the point of application to the final point of resistance the foundations.
