Seen as an extension of the land forms on both sides of the river and the island, the bridgeÃs organic shape grows out of one bank and ërootsà again on the other bank while reaching down to the island in between. The surface of the bridge is envisioned as a continuation of the land surfaces to which it connects.
The bridgeÃs form will be determined by and express the actual structural forces that are in effect as the bridge makes its span. Supported only from below, without overhead structural bravado, the structure will be pared down to the minimum, as if it was created from a solid block of concrete, carving away everything that isnÃt needed to hold up the bridge.
Reinforcing the notion of undulating land forms, the surface of the bridge is also seen as being organic in that it will offer opportunities for planting along its path. Plant materials will be chosen for the beauty they offer in all seasons. Openings in the bridge, as it passes over the island, will offer opportunities for existing mature trees to grow up through the structure providing shade and interaction with the landscape even when elevated.
Multiple paths offer a variety of experiences to users. A wider central path will be reserved for human-powered devices and pedestrians intended to ëfl owà from one side to the other more quickly, while a narrower side path, reserved for pedestrians, rises gently offering a place to ëeddyà while enjoying views of the river and the city.
