The proposed concept spans over St. PatrickÃs Island, while touching the riverbanks lightly at either end. The arch functions as a landmark to define St. PatrickÃs Island in a new and unique way, making it visible from downtown Calgary, both from adjacent roadways and the light rail transit line which crosses the river nearby.
The arch has for ages, been both the most natural and cost effective way of crossing a river and this is still true today. The bridge deck is designed with a gentle curve, bending out towards St. PatrickÃs Island and connecting naturally to the trails that will be part of the River Walk as envisioned in the River Walk Master Plan. A trail connection to St. PatrickÃs Island spins off the bridge at mid-span, thus creating a dynamic center with the potential to create a lookout point ñ a place to pause for a moment and take in views of St. PatrickÃs Island and downtown Calgary.
The suspended arch spans the full 180 metres of the Bow River, avoiding the need to touch St. PatrickÃs Island with foundations. Light fixtures are integrated in the railing along the bridge deck and light up the bridge deck. Spotlights mounted at the outside of the bridge deck light up the arch to make it glow at night.
