We present our concept for the St. PatrickÃs Bridge, Le Cirque Infini, as a symbol for the new district, the City of Calgary, and the province of Alberta to remain amongst the best places in the world to live, work, play and visit. InfinityÃs concept is a three dimensional cable net structure with a single pylon on St. PatrickÃs Island. The balanced cable net system suspends three lightweight curved pathways that come together at the landings, symbolizing the merging arms of the Bow River. The proposed structure is the first three dimensional suspension system of its kind.
The outer pathway is a promenade that offers an unobstructed view of the Calgary Skyline while providing a direct connection from Riverwalk to Memorial Drive. In contrast, the harmonic pattern of the cable net is experienced while crossing the two inner pathways connecting St. PatrickÃs island to the Bow River banks.
The bridge is designed for user comfort, safety, security and enjoyment. The pathways are integral with the landings, avoiding the need for expansion joints and bearings. The joint less concrete surface improves the level of comfort and durability. The safety and security features of the bridge include a direct link between the North and South river banks, bypassing the unpatrolled island park, and a prominent curved pathway illuminated to enhance visibility.
The concept design of Le Cirque Infini complies with the technical requirements of the competition. Special consideration was given to functionality, aesthetics, safety, durability, constructability, cost and maintenance. The principles of lightweight design were followed to reduce the dead load to payload ratio. Simple, durable and constructible details have been developed and presented as a part of the concept.
The form of the bridge invites a vivid interaction with nature, art of engineering, the city and people. The elegant pathways of Le Cirque Infini serve as a rendezvous spot where people will come together and enjoy life.
