The given topographical situation at the west end of the St. Patrickís Island creates an opportunity to design a unique bridge.† The present proposal responds to this opportunity with a light and reduced structure at a high esthetical level.

The alignment of the proposed design crosses each arm of the Bow River perpendicularly resulting in a kink of 20 degrees.† A ramp which provides bridge access to and from the island meets the bridge at the location of this kink.† The pathways situated at the shores of the river are connected with the bridge perpendicularly.† The pathway leading from the ramp towards the centre of the island can be easily connected into the existing path network on the island or with future developments.

The proposed structure consists of three spans arranged in a star shape.† Span 1 with a length of 71.56m, Span 2 with a length of 105.16m and the Ramp with a length of 33.16m, resulting in a total bridge length of 209.88m.

The individual spans are accomplished as suspension bridges with one single common pylon on the island at the centre of the star shape.† From this pylon all main cables lead radiantly to the abutments.† Each abutment consists of two triangular vertical concrete plates anchoring the main cables at low height.† Rock anchors transmit the cable forces to the ground thereafter.
