City-owned developer and The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth sign MOU to advance Master Plan Vision of Stampede Park.

Calgary Municipal Land Corporation and Calgary Stampede have been neighbours, literally, since 2007 when the development company moved into East Village and began to deliver a master plan vision for the East Village neighbourhood. Like all good neighbours, the two organizations have had many occasions over the years to collaborate on the delivery of several infrastructure programs and community partnerships.

Today, Calgary Municipal Land Corporation and Calgary Stampede announced they have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to collaborate on the advancement of the master plan of Stampede Park.

“Given the success of the East Village master plan program, and our experience in delivering complex infrastructure programs, we felt we could infuse some expertise and energy in support of our neighbour’s grander vision," said Michael Brown, President and CEO, Calgary Municipal Land Corporation. “Fortunately, they felt the same way.”

The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) details how CMLC will provide planning support and development strategy to accelerate delivery of the Calgary Stampede master plan. The vision espoused by the Calgary Stampede is to create a world-class, year-round gathering place for the community, by delivering connected experiences through inspired spaces, using western culture and brand as the lure.

“The east end of Calgary is coming alive and the momentum of the East Village project has had a positive impact for us all,” said Warren Connell, Chief Executive Officer, Calgary Stampede. “With this spirit, we will pursue the development of Calgary Stampede lands to serve the community, whether that is through commercial, residential or recreational offerings. This is a great collaboration between two local organizations, each with its own unique skills for building great communities and creating a diversified infrastructure and central gathering place for Calgary and Southern Alberta.”

The Stampede’s Master Plan has already seen the completion of the Agrium Western Event Centre, the greening of ENMAX Park, and soon the ground breaking for the new Youth Campus. The plan also considers, the delivery of commercial, residential and recreational development namely: Ramsay Exchange/Erlton Station Transit-Oriented Development, 17th Avenue Crossing, Stampede Trail retail and the expansion of conference spaces at the BMO Centre.

In addition to its collaboration with the Calgary Stampede, Calgary Municipal Land Corporation has been working with various Victoria Park stakeholders in an urban planning and envisioning process aimed at creating one holistic plan for the Rivers District area. The Rivers District area includes: East Village, Victoria Park, Stampede Park and portions of Ramsay community. Calgary Municipal Land Corporation uses a Community Revitalization Levy, collected within the Rivers District area, to deliver critical infrastructure improvements with an eye toward creating better connections and attracting investment to those communities.
