Formerly a factory warehouse for a national bedding manufacturer, the Simmons Building snoozed on the banks of the Bow River for decades before CMLC initiated restoration efforts in 2008. We repaired windows and mechanical systems, removed contaminated materials, refinished floors and installed new fire protection systems and doors.
Following the selection in July 2013 of the heritage building’s new retail tenants – Phil & Sebastian Coffee Roasters, Sidewalk Citizen Bakery and Charbar, who together will transform the Simmons Building into a culinary destination along the newly redeveloped RiverWalk™ – CMLC got busy on the Simmons once again, bringing it up to 21st-century spec while preserving and restoring as many historical elements as possible. The new tenants have now taken over, designing their interiors and readying their kitchens, roastery and ovens. In June 2015, the doors of the rejuvenated Simmons Building opened – just in time to welcome the first new residents of East Village.
The Simmons’ new tenants are local food and beverage heroes. All were founded in Calgary, all were home grown from grass roots, and all have become highly regarded local brands:
Phil & Sebastian Coffee Roasters
Phil & Sebastian Coffee Roasters are two coffee-loving guys who decided to leave their engineering jobs to open cafés and a roastery in their hometown of Calgary. The company has a devoted following among the city’s self-proclaimed “coffee snobs.”
Sidewalk Citizen Bakery
“Committed to the art of bread,” Sidewalk Citizen has amassed a huge following for its fresh baking.
Owned and operated by the chefs who created CHARCUT Roast House, which enRoute Magazine proclaimed to be one of Canada’s top 10 new restaurants when it opened in 2010.
