CMLC is governed by a Board of Directors appointed by The City of Calgary. The diversity and depth of knowledge that our Board members bring to our organization have been instrumental in our achievements and success.
Lyle Edwards, Chairman
Lyle, a chartered accountant, has been involved in numerous successful business ventures. Formerly, he was President of Highfield Corporation Ltd., a real estate development company, and he is the founder, developer and owner of Cottonwood Golf & Country Club. Lyle has a long history of volunteerism in Calgary; he currently serves as a member of the Flames Ambassadors, a community service group and was formerly the director of the Flames Foundation for life, a charitable organization.
Arlene Strom, ICD.D
Arlene joined the CMLC Board of Directors in 2012. She is currently Vice President of Sustainability & Communications for Suncor, providing leadership for sustainability strategy, stakeholder and Aboriginal relations, as well as communications. A resident of Calgary, Arlene is a member of the Law Society of Alberta, and she holds a Bachelor of Laws and Master of Arts from UBC as well as a Bachelor of Arts from Trinity Western University.
Evan joined the CMLC Board of Directors in 2012. He has been involved in the global oil and gas industry for more than 30 years, initially as a petroleum engineer and later as an investment banker. Evan currently serves as a director of a number of for-profit and community organizations including Gran Tierra Energy, Kaisen Energy, Opera American and the Calgary YMCA. Evan holds engineering degrees from Queen's University and University of Calgary, has an MBA from University of Michigan and is a registered Professional Engineer in Alberta. He resides in Calgary.
Larry joined CMLC’s Board of Directors in 2012. Currently, he is Executive Vice President, Western Canada at Cohn & Wolfe. For more than 25 years, Larry has specialized in integrated communication solutions, blending the science of management with the art of communication. In 1989, he formed Communication Incorporated, which was acquired in 2007 by RES PUBLICA, parent company of Cohn & Wolfe. Larry is a leader in forging strategic plans that reflect social, cultural and economic trends and that accurately translate management objectives and directions into communication strategies and action-oriented plans. He is an active member of the community and serves as Chair, Alberta Ballet, Chair, Bill Brooks Prostate Cancer Benefit and Director, Alberta College of Art and Design.
Mayor Naheed Nenshi
Mayor Naheed Nenshi is currently serving his third term and is Calgary’s 36th mayor. During his first term in office, Mayor Nenshi’s leadership resulted in many positive changes in Calgary to build better communities, keep Calgarians moving, and transform government to reinforce a culture of constant citizen-focused improvement at The City of Calgary. Prior to becoming mayor, he was Canada's first tenured professor in the field of nonprofit management at Mount Royal University's Bissett School of Business and a trusted business advisor to corporate leaders in Canada and the USA. His real passion is to make cities, especially Calgary, work better. He's the lead author of Building Up: Making Canada's Cities Magnets for Talent and Engines of Development and has long put his ideas to work in Calgary. Mayor Nenshi grew up in Calgary and has lived and worked in cities around the world before returning home. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce Degree (with distinction) from the University of Calgary and a Master in Public Policy from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, where he studied as a Kennedy Fellow.
As President and CEO, Michael has led the strategic direction of the organization since 2011. In his role, Michael works closely with the Board of Directors, City of Calgary and key community and business partners to realize the successful delivery of key infrastructure programs in support of the East Village Master Plan and the broader Rivers District Master Plan, along with pursing new opportunities to deliver value to CMLC’s sole shareholder, outside of the Rivers District.
Previously he made a highly visible mark on Calgary’s cityscape as an associate VP with Matthews Southwest – the organization responsible for delivering Encana’s 58-story downtown.
Michael is actively involved in the Calgary community providing his expertise to both business and cultural environments as a member on several boards and committees including, Calgary Economic Development’s Opportunity Calgary Investment Fund (OCIF); the Event Centre Assessment Committee (EVAC) - to explore a proactive vision for an event centre in east Victoria Park; the Chair of the Calgary Opera; the Calgary Stampede Board - Strategy Committee; the Calgary Airport Authority - Business Development Committee and the Supervisory Board for reSITE - an international Community Development Festival in Prague.
Dr. Lalli, FCPA, ICD.D is a senior executive with a vast array of financial management and global business experience. Currently, she serves as the President and Chief Executive Officer, Calgary Chamber of Commerce. Prior to this role, she was the President and CEO of Keystone Excavating Ltd, a leading Alberta construction company. Further, she has held positions as an Asia Pacific Operational Risk Advisor based in Singapore, Founder, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of a Calgary-headquartered industrial gas manufacturing firm and she has also held a number of financial management positions in the U.S. with a multinational.
Randy Magnussen joined the CMLC Board of Directors in 2015. Randy has been active in the real estate industry for more than 35 years, most recently as Executive Vice President at Bentall Kennedy LP, Canada's largest real estate advisor. In this role he was responsible for acquiring more than $500 million in real estate and the development of more than 7 million square feet of commercial real estate worth more than $1.2 billion.
Martin Molyneaux joined the CMLC Board of Directors in 2015. Martin is currently the Vice Chairman of FirstEnergy Capital Corp., a leading energy-focused, full-service, investment banking firm based in Calgary, Alberta. Martin was a founding member of FirstEnergy and managing director of the firm for over ten years and was widely recognized for his expertise in the Oil and Gas sector.
Councillor Ward 3, Jyoti Gondek
Councillor Jyoti Gondek was appointed to the CMLC Board of Directors by City Council in April 2018. As Councillor for Ward 3, Jyoti was lived, worked, volunteered and raised a family in the communities of northwest Calgary for the past 20 years. An active community supporter, Jyoti has served on numerous boards and committees, including a board member of the Urban Land Institute (ULI) Alberta, and served as an advisor on the National Executive Forum on Public Property and the Calgary Economic Development Commercial Real Estate Committee.
Prior to taking office in 2017, Jyoti was the Director of the Westman Centre for Real Estate Studies at the University of Calgary’s Haskayne School of Business. For 12 years prior, she provided research-based consulting services ranging from creating complete communities to fostering healthy corporate cultures.
Councillor Ward 5, George Chahal
As a born and raised Calgarian, Councillor George Chahal has lived and worked in Calgary for over 40 years and is an active volunteer in the Calgary community. Prior to joining office in 2017, George was a successful small business owner and entrepreneur equipped with a Bachelors of Arts in Economics and a Master of Environmental Design.
