About This Event

Calgary is growing — and with that growth comes the need for more housing, more connected neighbourhoods and more thoughtful ways of building complete communities.

Across North America, cities are turning to Transit-Oriented Communities (TOCs): walkable, mixed-use neighbourhoods built around transit stations that bring a greater choice of housing, retail, services and gathering spaces within easy reach of transit.

For the seventeenth installment of CMLC’s Placemakers speaker series, we will explore how transit-oriented communities can help support Calgary’s growth by bringing thoughtful density and complete communities to underutilized land along the Red Line.

The evening will begin with presentations from:

Guy Benn, Program Manager for Transit-Oriented Development at Portland’s regional transit agency, TriMet, leads a nationally recognized program that partners with developers and communities to deliver housing, mixed-use development and community amenities around transit stations across the Portland region.

He will be joined by Kate Thompson, President & CEO of CMLC, who is stewarding the organization’s growth into transit-oriented community development.

Following the presentations, a moderated panel discussion will explore questions such as:

  • What makes Transit-Oriented Development successful in cities around the world?
  • How do TOCs deliver market-informed density and a range of housing typologies.
  • What are the planning principles that guide successful transit-oriented communities?

Free event, pre-registration is required.

Panelists to be announced.
