University of Calgary
The University of Calgary school formerly known as the Faculty of Environmental Design (EVDS) first announced their downtown location with a five-year lease agreement provided by CMLC in the Castell building in December 2018. On April 26, 2019, with the support of a five-year $1.5 million investment by CMLC, the newly named School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape officially opened the City Building Design Lab – an innovative research-hub in downtown Calgary. The former Central Library is now bustling with students who occupy the buildings main floor and basement. The lab and the programming will offer students unique opportunities to connect with the building industry and community on a range of city-building programs and conversations.
The space will act as a community connector and catalyst for civic transformation. It will be used to facilitate teaching, learning, and research in architecture, planning, and landscape architecture, and will also serve as a focal point for professional discovery and public discussion about the future of city‐building.
