Background & General Scope of Position

Reporting to the Vice President, Building & Infrastructure, the Design Director will provide a voice at the table, elevating the conversation with innovative design expertise and in-depth knowledge of design relating to CMLC’s work. This role has the ability to help impact our city and influence the design direction of all CMLC projects.

The Design Director will oversee and support a diverse range of projects of various scales from ideation to completion. This role will work with CMLC project teams as well as third party consultants to ensure elevated, quality design outcomes. The Design Director requires an understanding of the design process from programming through to detailed design and an ability to advocate and challenge current best practices in design and construction. The successful candidate has a background that has demonstrated success leading design teams through early planning and exploration through to approvals and permitting.

The successful candidate will have strong interpersonal skills and can develop strong relationships with CMLC’s partners. They are comfortable representing the best interests of our projects as an owner’s representative while managing the expectations of both internal and external stakeholders. The successful candidate is highly adaptive and listens to understand and lead.

Qualifications

Essential Relevant Experience

  • 5+ years of experience working in architecture, landscape architecture, land development, urban design and/or project management.
  • Demonstrable experience leading the design process, an ability to recognize quality design, an understanding of its value and a track record of defending it.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication and presentation skills.
  • A strong fit with the CMLC team is essential; must like friendly competition and laughing.

Desired Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in architecture or landscape architecture. Master’s degree preferred.

Working Conditions

  • A combination of office and project site presence is required.
  • CMLC offers a flexible hybrid work environment between office and working from home.

You attend a variety of events and festivals, are in the know on all YYC happenings and could be described as a ‘person about town’ You already love East Village and often find yourself advocating for what thriving urban neighbourhoods do for our city You’re excited about the future Culture + Entertainment District and can envision the area as a thriving, bustling scene Your friends might say you’re too chatty, but you just think silence is super awkward You like there to be a bit of a physical component to your job, it makes you feel healthy and productive and you don’t mind digging in to get the job done plus you like it to look just right You have a desire to grow your event management and marketing skill set Most of the things you’ll get up to as a member of EAST Team, but there’s a good chance it’s not all: Support the delivery of a robust calendar of outdoor activations, events and programming in East Village, St Patrick’s Island and in The Culture + Entertainment District Be committed to providing a positive experience for everyone that you encounter Perform all necessary set-up and tear-down duties for activations, following direction from production schedules and supervisors (some lifting, bending and light cleaning is required) Intercept and engage with area visitors and event participants in order to educate on East Village and/or The Culture + Entertainment District Understand and deliver key messages to advance the public’s familiarity with the neighbourhood, progress and milestones, upcoming activations, events and programming, etc. Support the retail “Merch” program with sales and fulfillment of our cool, locally sourced products Distribute promotional collateral and brand tools to area visitors and event participants Serve as an on-site representative to third-party event coordinators at park and event spaces in East Village, St Patrick’s Island and The Culture + Entertainment District Create short-form social media content and post real time to relevant social channels, documenting the energy, activities and interactions taking place. Provide superb customer service, ensuring an exceptional experience for all visitors to the area, responsible for notifying maintenance team when site support is required Manage inventory of on-site supplies and marketing collateral, ensure storage areas are organized This is a part-time position with 2-4 shifts available per week and 6-20 projected hours per week. Most shifts take place on evenings and weekends and most are outside. Successful candidates must have a flexible schedule able to accommodate these shifts. Pretty convinced you were born for this?
