East Village development continues with new hotel construction and further private investment.

Truman, Marriott to bring Moxy Hotels to East Village

CMLC, Truman and Marriott International today celebrated the start of construction on a new Moxy property: Moxy Calgary East Village. The new 131-key hotel located on Jack & Jean Leslie RiverWalk is set to be the community’s third hotel.

“Moxy Calgary East Village is the third development project to break ground in East Village this year, and we’re thrilled to see the development industry’s continued confidence in our vision for the neighbourhood,” said CMLC President and CEO Kate Thompson. “Building on Truman and Marriott International’s Autograph Collection Hotel on Stampede Park – now under construction – and the W Hotel and JW Marriott Hotels & Residences – nearing approvals in The Culture + Entertainment District – we are proud to continue collaborating with this standout team to deliver another hotel in support of our master plan vision for East Village. These Rivers District hotels are set to collectively help offset a citywide deficit of hotel rooms, most of which are needed in Calgary’s Greater Downtown to provide accommodation to tourists, conference and event attendees, and business travelers.”

Truman purchased the parcel at 6 Avenue and Confluence Way S.E. in 2025. As the last of East Village’s prime riverfront sites, the new hotel will boast views of the Bow River and easy access to the neighbourhood’s cycling connections, George C. King Bridge, St. Patrick’s Island and all of East Village’s amenities, restaurants and retailers.

“As Alberta’s largest developer-builder, we see tremendous potential in Calgary’s tourism and hospitality sector. We are proud to invest over $2.5 billion in six hotel developments that will deliver over 1,200 keys to market, with more hotel announcements to come. This generational investment Truman is making in hospitality infrastructure will unlock the potential of Calgary’s tourism economy. It will provide accommodation capacity that enables the full potential of concurrent multi-billion-dollar investments being made by all orders of government in cultural and entertainment institutions in the Greater Downtown,” said Tony Trutina, Chief Operating Officer for Truman. “Our vision is to contribute to Calgary’s arrival as a world-class destination by creating developments that support economic activity, attract visitors, define Calgary’s skyline, and enhance the vibrancy of the communities where we build. We’re excited to deepen our partnership with CMLC and begin construction on our first project in East Village, and are pleased to further our relationship with Marriott International to bring this new hotel to life.”

Across five storeys, the Moxy Calgary East Village is planned to bring 131 hotel rooms, communal gathering and fitness spaces, and amenities that can be used by both guests and community members, including a bar, and an outdoor thermal spa.

Truman has entered into an agreement with Marriott to deliver the new hotel as a Moxy, one of Marriott’s lifestyle boutique hotel brands.

“Marriott continues to expand our hospitality options in Canada to meet the diverse needs of guests, owners and developers,” said Tim Reardon, Regional Vice President, Western Canada for Marriott International. “Our Moxy Hotels are all about showing guests a good time with small but smart rooms and stylish communal spaces, which makes it a perfect fit for the vibrancy of East Village. We’re proud to be part of this neighbourhood’s – and Calgary’s – ongoing evolution as a tourism and hospitality destination.”

Construction began on Moxy Calgary East Village in mid-September and is expected to be completed in 2028.

Further private investment in East Village

CMLC is also pleased to share that Sumus Bankside has purchased Block Q3 and Q4 in East Village. Two new mixed-use residential buildings will complete Q Block, which is already home to Slokker’s Verve condo building and forthcoming Vibe rental building, currently under construction.

The Q3/Q4 project will be Sumus Bankside’s second development in East Village. Construction is already underway on their two-building Library Square project east of the Central Library, and the team expects to break ground on the Q3/Q4 project in 2027. More details about the mixed-used residential development will be shared in the coming months.
