In partnership with the Calgary Housing Company (CHC) and not-for-profit carya, CMLC is managing a major renovation of East Village Place. The building, located at 610 8th Avenue SE, is owned by CHC and currently houses 164 affordable living units.
The renovation, led by design team EllisDon Construction and Group2, will transform the building’s second storey into Village Commons – carya’s brand-new community hub for East Village.
When the renovation is complete in January 2021, the space will offer community amenities to Calgarians of all ages and from all walks of life. Calgarians from East Village and beyond will be able to use the space to learn, cook, create, and access the social and community supports they need to thrive.
Many of the programs carya had been running out of carya EAST—their temporary home inside the Salvation Army—will relocate to the new Village Commons when it’s ready. These include The Way In seniors’ outreach program; Seniors’ Space, offering social and recreation programming such as volunteering, social groups and activities; and other opportunities for community members to get active, creative and social.
New programs launching for the first time in the new Village Commons will include food and nutrition programs, additional seniors’ programming, volunteering opportunities, counselling and partnership programs.
An exciting highlight of Village Commons will be the neighbourhood’s first community kitchen. carya envisions its fully equipped, industrial cooking space as a food and nutrition hub for everyone. It’ll serve as a gathering space, providing community connection through food, culture and education for all ages and offering weekly meal preparation, cooking classes, nutrition counselling, menu planning and food budgeting. As if that weren’t enough, the space will also serve as a start-up incubator for catering programs or entrepreneurs and as a rental space for private parties and pop-up restaurant events.
