National Music Centre
In 2008, CMLC launched a national campaign calling for ideas to rejuvenate the historic King Eddy. The Cantos Music Foundation stepped forward with a brilliant proposal: reinvent the acclaimed hotel as a National Music Centre, which would later be named Studio Bell, home of the National Music Centre.
Designed by Allied Works Architects of Portland, Oregon, Studio Bell is an architectural icon and a new kind of cultural institution. The 160,000 square foot, $168 million project opened on July 1, 2016 around the historic King Edward Hotel – Calgary's legendary home of the blues. The stunning, shimmering building straddles 4th Avenue SE via the East Village Skybridge - an overhead passageway that leads to another vast building.
